Sex Addiction

What are the criteria for sexual addiction?

  1. Person engages in behaviors that become out of control and compulsive.
  2. Significant amounts of time are spent practicing or recovering from those behaviors.
  3. These behaviors are practiced instead of fulfilling their normal obligations.
  4. Person continues behaviors despite negative outcomes.
  5. These behaviors become more intense, frequent, or more risky over time.
  6. Person loses interest in regular activities and experience anxiety and discomfort when they quit these activities.

Most addicts have experienced emotional, sexual, or physical abuse in their lives.  Most also came from families with other addicts in the family and from families that were either rigid in their organization or disengaged in relationship style or both.  With sexual addiction there are often other addictions present, such as chemical dependency, eating disorders, compulsive working, spending, or gambling.

Treatment options for sexual addiction include individual, couple, and family therapy, group therapy, 12-step meetings, accountability measures, and reading.  When sex addicts continue in these treatment modes for 2-5 years, they often experience life as satisfying and enjoyable and free from bondage.
